Sorted · FAQ

Fair questions.

No legalese. No "industry-leading". The 30 most-asked questions, answered the way we'd answer them to our mates.

The basics

What is Sorted, in one sentence?
An Australian peer-to-peer payments app that's free and instant. Sign in with your phone, send to any @handle, lands in seconds — and the Sorted card lets you tap to pay with your balance anywhere Mastercard works.
Wait — is this crypto?
Technically the rails are crypto rails, yeah. But you'll never see a wallet address, a seed phrase, or a gas fee. You sign in with your phone number, type a handle, money moves. The blockchain part is plumbing — same as how you don't think about TCP/IP when you send a text.
How do I sign up?
Download the app (App Store / Google Play), enter your phone number, claim a handle, complete ID verification (drivers licence + selfie, takes about 90 seconds), link your bank, top up, send. Total time: 2-3 minutes.
Is it actually free? Where's the catch?
Not from your pocket. We earn on card transactions, optional extras like instant cashouts, and partnerships with the businesses in Sorted Perks. Sending money to mates is free and stays free — no transaction fees, no FX margin on Aussie sends.

Money & safety

What happens if Sorted goes under?
Your balance isn't on Sorted's books — it's AUDD, issued by AUDC Pty Ltd, backed 1:1 by AUD held in tier-1 Aussie bank accounts. If we vanished tomorrow, your AUDD is still redeemable through AUDC directly. We're the front door, not the vault.
Are deposits insured (FCS / govt guarantee)?
Sorted itself is not an Authorised Deposit-taking Institution (ADI), so the FCS doesn't cover funds in your Sorted balance directly. However, the AUD reserves backing AUDD are held in tier-1 ADI bank accounts which are themselves FCS-protected up to $250k per institution. We're upfront about this — if FCS coverage matters to you, this is something to weigh up.
Is there really a card?
Yes — the Sorted card, on the Mastercard network. Tap your phone or the physical card anywhere Mastercard is accepted, straight from your Sorted balance. Freeze and unfreeze it from the app in one tap. It's rolling out with launch — claim your handle to be first in line.
What if I get scammed or send to the wrong person?
5-second undo on every send. Past that, we'll do everything we can to help recover funds, but instant settlement means we can't reverse a transaction unilaterally — same as PayID. Slide-to-send shows the recipient name and avatar before commit so you can sanity-check.

The fine print

Who regulates you?
Sorted operates as an authorised representative under an AFSL (Australian Financial Services Licence). AUDD is issued by AUDC Pty Ltd, which holds its own AFSL granted by ASIC in February 2026. AUSTRAC-registered for AML/CTF. We're not flying solo on a "we'll figure compliance out later" plan.
Can I send money overseas?
Not yet. v1 is intentionally narrow — Australian P2P only. International sends and a debit card are on the roadmap, but we'd rather nail the simple thing first than ship a half-broken everything-app.
What are Sorted Points?
Doing normal stuff earns points — sending to mates, tapping your card, referring a friend. Points unlock perks at local Aussie businesses. They're a thank-you tied to what you do, never to how much you hold. No purchase-this, no maintain-that.
Who's behind this?
Built in Brisbane by a small team that got tired of money taking three days to move between people who already know each other. Get in touch if you want a more thorough answer.
